Description
One of the less numerically frequent, but most disabling of the mental disorders. Schizophrenia is characterised by disorganisation in: thought processes (including delusions which are irrational beliefs held despite contradicting evidence); perception (becoming engrossed in minute detail and being unable to block out irrelevant stimuli, or perceptual disturbances such as hallucinations which are sensory experiences without the external sensory stimuli that causes it); communication (lacking clarity, attention and connection); emotion (feelings seem to have little connection to the situation); and motor activity (lacking connection to the physical reality of the situation and not aimed at any identifiable goal). Affects about 1% of the Australian population.
