Description
Conditions involving sustained changes in mood and emotions, and which impair
functioning. Includes changes characterised by depression and/or elation. People who
experience elevated mood (mania) display increased energy, can be easily
distracted, have increased sex drive, and sleep less than usual. People who experience
depressed mood (depression) display despair and sadness, have loss of energy and
interest in things normally enjoyed, sleep disruption and loss of appetite. Some people
can alternate between the two extremes of depression and mania (bipolar mood disorder).
