Herpes viruses are extremely common, with around 100 identified in a
variety of animal species. Currently 8 human herpes viruses have been identified. All of
these viruses are members of the one family and have common features - for example the
ability following initial infection to remain dormant, and to be reactivated by triggers
such as individual's immune status, stress or sunlight. The conditions caused by the 8
human herpes viruses include infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever), chicken pox and
shingles, cold sores, and genital herpes. |
